There are four breaks that fall within the academic calendar. Read below for details on housing during these break periods.
All student residences remain open for Thanksgiving Break.
Student residences close for Winter Break each year @ 12noon on the day after the official end of exams, and re-open two days prior to the official beginning of Winter Study, @ 8am.
Students whose home address is outside of the United States as well as students who qualify as independent may request to remain on-campus during Winter Break, and those approved to do so consolidate into one building (currently Fayerweather is designated for this purpose). The process for requesting & selecting Winter Break housing takes place during the fall semester, typically in November/December.
For athletic teams pre-approved for early return to campus during Winter Break, Athletics will send rosters of participating students to Student Life.
Students who are found in College residences during any part of this break without approval from Student Life will be fined $150 per day or portion thereof, and may be reported to the Dean’s Office for disciplinary action.
January “Dead Week”
All student residences remain open for January “Dead Week.”
However, students leaving campus housing at the end of Winter Study must be moved out of their rooms by 12noon on the day after the official end of Winter Study classes. These students who are found in College residences after this move-out day & time without approval from Student Life will be fined $150 per day or portion thereof, and may be reported to the Dean’s Office for disciplinary action.
Additionally, students returning to the College for Spring Semester (from withdrawal, study-away, etc.) may not move into their Spring Semester room until 8am on the day before Spring Semester classes begin. These students who are found in College residences before this move-in day & time without approval from Student Life will be fined $150 per day or portion thereof, and may be reported to the Dean’s Office for disciplinary action.
As part of a 1 to 2 year pilot program, all student residences will remain open for Spring Break for all students. This pilot program begins with Spring Break 2019. Many campus services are reduced or not available during Spring Break, including Health Services (medical & IWS), athletic facilities, dining, and others. Campus construction work may be increased, including earlier & later hours. Some residences will close for up to 24 hours during the break for life safety system testing, resulting in temporary student relocations. More information for spring break 2019 will come out in February & March of 2019.
