  • Break Period Housing

There are four breaks that fall within the academic calendar.

    Thanksgiving Break

All student residences remain open for Thanksgiving Break.

    Winter Break

Student residences close for Winter Break each year @ 12noon on the day after the official end of exams, and re-open two days prior to the official beginning of Winter Study, @ 8am.

Students whose home address is outside of the United States may request to remain on-campus during Winter Break, and those approved to do so consolidate into one building (currently Fayerweather is designated for this purpose).  The process for requesting & selecting Winter Break housing takes place during the fall semester, typically in November/December. When applications are being accepted, the application will be linked here.

For athletic teams pre-approved for early return to campus during Winter Break, Athletics will send rosters of participating students to the Office of Student Life.

Students who are found in College residences during any part of this break without approval from OSL will be fined $150 per day or portion thereof, and may be reported to the Dean's Office for disciplinary action.

    January "Dead Week"

All student residences remain open for January "Dead Week."

However, students leaving campus housing at the end of Winter Study must be moved out of their rooms by 12noon on the day after the official end of Winter Study classes. These students who are found in College residences after this move-out day & time without approval from OSL will be fined $150 per day or portion thereof, and may be reported to the Dean's Office for disciplinary action.

Additionally, students returning to the College for Spring Semester (from withdrawal, study-away, etc.) may not move into their Spring Semester room until 8am on the day before Spring Semester classes begin. These students who are found in College residences before this move-in day & time without approval from OSL will be fined $150 per day or portion thereof, and may be reported to the Dean's Office for disciplinary action.

    Spring Break

Student residences close for Spring Break on the first Saturday of the break @ 12noon, and re-open for the remainder of the Spring Semester on the last Saturday of the break @ 8am.

The following students may request to remain on-campus during Spring Break:

    • Students whose home address is outside of a 425-mile radius of the campus.
    • Seniors who are working on a thesis.
    • Students who are working a critical job on-campus that must continue during the break.

The process for requesting to stay over Spring Break takes place starting in mid-late February. When applications are being accepted, the application will be linked here.

For athletic teams pre-approved to be on-campus during Spring Break, Athletics will send rosters of participating students to the Office of Student Life.

Students who are found in College residences during any part of this break without approval from OSL will be fined $150 per day or portion thereof, and may be reported to the Dean's Office for disciplinary follow-up.

  • Lottery Holds & Key Holds

Various offices on campus may place a hold on any student's eligibility to participate in a housing lottery/room draw and/or on their eligibility to receive the key/code to their room when they move in. Student Health Services, the Bursar's Office, Financial Aid, the Dean's Office, Facilities, Environmental Safety & Compliance, Campus Safety, and the Office of Student Life all have authority to place a lottery and/or key hold on your PeopleSoft account. Typical reasons include but are not limited to: incomplete paperwork, late payments, unpaid parking tickets, disciplinary issues, etc.

Students with a Lottery Hold on their account are ineligible to participate in housing lottery/draw processes until the Lottery Hold has been released. Students with a Key Hold may have their room key/code held upon moving into their room until the Key Hold has been released.

To find out if you have a Lottery and/or Key Hold on your account, look in PeopleSoft Self-Service. It'll also note the office(s) which placed the hold on your account.

To get a Lottery or Key Hold released, contact the office(s) which placed the Hold on your account. Once they confirm with OSL that the situation is taken care of, the hold will be released.

  • Personal Property Insurance & Liability

Care is taken to protect personal property in College buildings, but the College cannot assume responsibility for loss or damage to such property through fire, theft, or any other cause. Williams does not carry insurance on personal property. Students are therefore advised to keep their rooms locked when absent from them and to investigate personal property coverage through their parents’ Home Owners policy or other ways of obtaining such coverage. Williams is not responsible for loss or damage to your personal items.
